In the Spring of 1991, The Independent Latino Student Association, ILSA was officially recognized as a student organization at California State University, Fullerton.  ILSA was originally formed by five students who envisioned a more encompassing club.  They desired an association which would invite and welcome, not only Mexican-Americans, but all Latinos regardless of specific origin.  This was done with the intention to include and not exclude.
The founding members intended more than just the inclusion of Latinos at CSUF.  They intended to foster active involvement in the Latino community on and off campus, to assist in the education of Latinos, to enhance the awareness of the Latino culture to all people and especially to bring cohesiveness amoung Latinos.  These intentions were made with the purpose of assisting and improving the lives of Latinos.
It is for this reason that ILSA continues to exist and to thrive.  Since Fall 1990, ILSA has grown from the concept of five individuals, to become the largest Latino Organization at CSUF.  ILSA has expanded beyond Cal State Fullerton consisting of sister chapters at 3 other colleges and 1 high school.  Currently, ILSA is in the process of activating an alumni association to provide networking opportunites and career advice for the benifit of current student at all our chapters.
ILSA provides an opportunity for its members to learn and develop leadership skills.  As well as keeping members informed in issues which affect the Latino community.
